The sad news today is that celebrated sitcom writer and animal rights campaigner Carla Lane has passed away at the age of 87. Her writing career scored many hit sitcoms including The Liver Birds, Butterflies and, perhaps most famously of all, Bread which charted the exploits of the Boswell's, a large Catholic family, ducking and diving to make ends meet in the impoverished 1980s Liverpool.
The sing-a-long, catchy theme tune was written and composed by Lane and David Mackay and sung by the cast. It was released as a single by the BBC, but failed to chart.
Running for seven series from 1986 to 1991 Bread was a huge success and a favourite in our house for a time, but the cast changes (several regulars left to be replaced by lookey-likey actors or inferior characters altogether) and the growing propensity towards 'dramady' (comedy drama) subsequently alienated us. Indeed much of Lane's writing often crossed the line into drama and whilst it's true to say it wasn't always to everyone's taste, there's no denying she created some successful, fondly remembered comedies.
RIP
