Theda Bara (1885-1955) was The Vamp, a silent movie femme fatale who helped create the very template for Hollywood's exotic wanton women roles.
Considered the first cinematic sex symbol, with roles including Cleopatra and Salome, Bara wore very revealing costumes in her movies, in the days before the 1930 Production Code. Sadly the vast majority of Bara's films are now lost, destroyed in a fire in 1937. But her legend continues and we have many beautiful photographs, just a fraction of which capturing her unique look, are shared here...
Theda married Hollywood film director, the Liverpudlian Charles Brabin, in 1921 and retired from film herself five years later, never having appeared in 'talkies'. Their marriage lasted until her death, of stomach cancer, in April 1955 aged 69, with Brabin passing away in November of that year aged 75.
