Another sad passing, Donna Douglas famous for playing the adorable Elly May Clampett in the US sitcom The Beverly Hillbillies for nine years from 1962 to 1971 has lost her battle with pancreatic cancer at the age of 81 (though some sources are claiming 82)
A former Miss Baton Rouge and Miss New Orleans, Douglas moved to New York in the late 50s securing parts on The Perry Como Show and The Steve Allen Show in the dollybird mould. This led to small roles in films such as Li'l Abner and the Doris Day/Rock Hudson romcom Lover Come Back as well as TV roles in shows like The Twilight Zone and Thriller before she secured her claim to fame as tomboy Elly May Clampett. As a kid I used to love watching The Beverly Hillbillies. It was repeated on Channel 4 I think in the 80s and 90s and it was nice to watch a show with the family knowing that mum and dad had seen it and enjoyed it first time around.
In 1966, Douglas took her only starring role as the sharp shooting Frankie, girlfriend of Elvis Presley's Mississippi riverboat gambler Johnny in his film Frankie and Johnny.
