RIP Bernard Kay
And another sad loss, veteran actor Bernard Kay has died aged 86.
The Bolton born Kay started out life as a reporter for the Bolton Evening News and as a stringer for the Manchester Guardian before getting the acting bug during National Service in the late 1940s. In 1963 he married actress Patrica Haines (who had just divorced Michael Caine) and they remained together until her death in 1977. A very familiar face, Kay appeared in over 100 TV programmes, including Z Cars, Doctor Who, Survivors (in one of that series finest episodes; Mad Dog), Colditz (in one of their finest episodes, Tweedledum) The Avengers, Softly Softly, The Champions, The Professionals, The Sweeney, Juliet Bravo, Rockliffe's Babies, A Very British Coup, London's Burning, Coronation Street, The Lion The Witch and the Wardrobe, Century Falls and Doctors. He also starred in such films as Pierrepoint, The Witchfinder General, Sinbad and The Eye of The Tiger, Sweeney!, Carry On Sergeant (in which he almost got the sack from after trying to tell the star, William Hartnell, where he was going wrong with the drill) and Doctor Zhivago, pictured below.
