RIP Anne Kirkbride

Sad news today, Coronation Street star Anne Kirkbride has died at the age of 60

The actress had played the character Deirdre Barlow in the soap since 1972 and was famous for her large glasses and husky voice. I haven't really watched the show for some years now (well, apart from the odd episode) but she was a tele staple when I was growing up in the 80s and 90s and a Granadaland icon. I believe she was on a break for the last few months which may or may not have coincided with the short unspecified illness which she died from today. Prior to joining Coronation Street 42 years ago, Kirkbride had starred in the Jack Rosenthal TV play Another Sunday and Sweet FA, her only other TV acting credit.

RIP

  1. Corrie is the only soap I watch, so Deirdre will be missed. Imagine she was in it 44 years. She left the soap suddenly some months ago, so presumably her illness was the reason. Fulsome tributes in the presss and on tv. RIP indeed.

    1. 42 years I believe, she joined in '72 and as you say left our screens last year. No word yet as to cause of death/nature of illness but one can't help but wonder if this was a return of the cancer she beat some twenty years ago. RIP
