The Dad's Army Remake

Much has been made about the news that sitcom legend Dad's Army is to be remade as a movie. There's the usual 'shock-horror-please-no!' reactions but I've learnt to be a little more kindly towards such attempts. Let's face it Dad's Army is still an extremely popular show, one that brings in fans generation after generation anything that can continue its appeal has got to be a good thing right?

And if it's a flop well no matter, the original series and the national treasure status affection it has is strong enough to weather such a storm.

So the news is that Arthur Lowe's Captain Mainwaring and John Le Mesurier's Sergeant Wilson will be played by Toby Jones and Bill Nighy respectively.

Toby Jones will play Captain Mainwaring

Bill Nighy will play Sergeant Wilson

But what about the rest of the Home Guard platoon of Walmington-On Sea? Well I thought it'd be fun to suggest a few actors who might be able to step into the shoes of the greats.

For Private Walker, the cockney spiv, who else but Daniel Mays?

For the prophet of doom Scottish undertaker Private Frazer, how about Gary Lewis?

The sweet old man and constantly 'excused' Private Godfrey could be played by Clive Swift

Whilst dopey Mummy's Boy Private Pike could be Theo Barklem-Biggs

Which just leaves us with the most difficult choice; Corporal Jones. It's a gift of a role, with any actor guaranteed all the best slapstick and audience affection. The role was originally taken by Clive Jones, a younger man pretending to be a much older man. Thing is there aren't many performers like Dunn out there any more, he truly was one of a kind. But what about the man who was second choice for Corporal Jones way back in 1968 when the show started? Back then, he was another young man who excelled in playing old dodderers but now he's the right sort of age. What about David Jason?

What do you think?

Is the remake a good idea?

Do you agree/like these suggestions?

Who would you like to see cast?
