Brixton Riots : Petition for Legal Aid in the Inquest into the death of Cherry Groce
In 1985 an innocent mother, Cherry Groce, was shot in her own home by the police. The incident sparked the Brixton riots and left Cherry paralysed for the rest of her life.
No one was held responsible for her shooting and independent reports made following Cherry's death in 2011 claim the events of 1985 were a contributing factor to her demise.
29 years on, an inquest has finally been called for June and the Met have at last publicly apologised this weekend.
But Cherry's family have been denied legal aid and are unable to fund a lawyer to represent them in court. Without representation they will not have a voice at the inquest. As a result a petition is currently online to support their appeal for legal aid.
