Theme Time : Victoria Wood - Dinnerladies

This is the rarely heard vocal version of Wood's theme to her own sitcom Dinnerladies, performed in full on the Parkinson show in 2000.

I love the melancholia in the lyrics, it's such a beautifully poignant and emotive song about dreams never coming to fruition, being stuck working a dead end job somewhere Monday through to Friday, and of course there's that line 'Day by day, drops of water wear the stone away', which is just sublime and so utterly Northern and/or British. Victoria Wood isn't just a very funny comedienne, she's also a skilled musician with a canny observational eye for the truths of ordinary life and the human condition and I think this one sums that up perfectly.
