Folk is a genre of music that is very very close to my heart. Indeed you could say it has my heart.
One of my favourite current acts are The Unthanks, made up of North East sisters Becky and Rachel Unthank. They have a beautiful harmonising style that is both haunting and beguiling.
Here's two tracks from their album Here's The Tender Coming; the first 'The Testimony Of Patience Kershaw' is based on an actual commission into child labour in the pits during Victorian England. The written record can be found here (Number 26) http://www.victorianweb.org/history/ashley.html
Whereas the second, 'Lucky Gilchrist' details a mutual Scottish friend of theirs who died prematurely and has the delightful lyric "Lucky G full of glee, a bit like Freddie Mercury, camp and yet angry, except you had a lady"
